Bachelor Projekt Systementwicklung
International Bachelor Project System Development (PSE) with Centria, Kokkola (FI)
Compact course 29.09.-03.10.25 Kokkola (FI) & 01.12.-05.12.25 Darmstadt (DE)

Topic
This semester we offer a range of topics: Creating an application for an embedded plattform from phytec (making experiences as non-embedded-experts), improving a city-simulator with real tiny model cars (using ESP32 Cam-Modules), and exploring "micromouse", a labyrinth that is to be traversed by tiny robots. In addition to these three defined topics, you can also opt for some further tasks defined by industry in the course of the ICSE 2026 conference, or even come up with your self-defined project.
This is a joint project between Centria University in Kokkola (Finnland) and University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (Germany).
Organization
The project starts with a kickoff week (29.09.-03.10.25) in Kokkola, students from Darmstadt will be there on excursion and meet their team members from Finnland. We will form mixed student teams that start to collaborate face-to-face. We identify the topics student teams want to work on and start to implement the project this week. Then, students will travel home and continue to work together remotely. We meet again for a final week (01.12.-05.12.25) in Darmstadt, this time students from Kokkola visiting Darmstadt. It will be again working face-to-face to finish up the project and conclude with a final presentation and report.
There will be time for joint social activities in both face-to-face-weeks. The excursion to the partner site will be organized by teaching staff, students need to be prepared to contribute to the travel expenses with a very moderate fee (e.g. 200 €).
As we have to book flights to Finnland, we have to have our participant list ready at the preparation meeting on 8th of September (BBB, hour to be announced), well before the semester starts (we are in Kokkola the week before semester starts). On the other hand you will be finished with the project already in early December and can concentrate on other courses for the rest of the semester. The excursion can only be done with 5-10 students from Darmstadt. Normally we travel on Sunday to Kokkola, and return on Saturday. If you want to stay a day or so in Helsinki on own expenses, make up your mind before the preparatory meeting. I can only book your flights after you paid me your contribution, directly following the meeting.
Required Skills
We will form teams with complementary skills if possible. You should have some experience in programming and project management. Knowledge in one of these fields is a plus:
- Networking with TCP- and UDP-sockets
- Image processing
- Audio signals
- Application development under Windows or Linux
- UI Design
- Embedded systems
- Autonomous systems / Robotics
You should be able to work self-motivated in an international team.
Students have to be available full time during the face-to-face weeks in Kokkola and Darmstadt, and need to be available part-time during the remote operation weeks between the two face-to-face weeks, in order to meet the requiremente for a 7.5 CP "project system development" in Darmstadt or an 8 CP "capstone project" in Kokkola, respectively.
