Alexander Wiesmaier holds a professorship for cyber security and foundations of computer science at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. He is a founding member and co-head of the Applied Cyber Security Darmstadt research group.
His main research interest is applied cryptography, i.e., using, adapting, or developing cryptographic technologies to meet defined security goals in given application scenarios. This entails work at the intersection of three major components: 1) cryptographic algorithms and protocols, 2) security architectures and infrastructures, and 3) migration strategies and management. Where indicated, long-term security / resilience is established using subsets of crypto-agility, hybrid approaches, renewal schemes, and fail-safe mechanisms. Currently, the major part of his efforts are directed towards post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration. On occasion, he also does research in the areas of privacy, offensive security, and network technologies.
He is a principal investigator at ATHENE National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity, borad member of the EUT+ Sustainability Science Lab, co-founder and leader of DaiSSy, the Scientific Interest Group on Dependability, Safety and Security, member of Research Center Applied Informatics, member of Doctoral Center Applied informatics, and founder and responsible manager of Steinbeis Transfer Center Cyber Security & System Architecture.
