Open Source Project in Cooperation with the University Würzburg

VR Training Environment for Gynecology

Our vision is to create a high-quality, cost-effective, resource-efficient, and user-friendly simulator for training basic diagnostic and surgical skills in dysplasia clinics. This project was initiated by Anne Cathrine Quenzer and Matthias Kiesel from the University Women's Clinic in Würzburg.

For aspiring gynecologists looking to practice conization, VR-Koni-Trainer offers a virtual training experience enhanced with gamification elements.

Currently, aspiring specialists observe multiple surgeries before performing them under supervision. However, both observation and supervision are limited due to the restricted view. While conization is a straightforward procedure, the risks are significant, including infertility and bowel injuries.

Learning Opportunities in the Project

  • GitLab: Project planning with issues, merge requests, CI, and collaboration on a large codebase
  • Unity: VR development and 2D UI design with the UI Toolkit.
  • C#
  • Communication: Working in an interdisciplinary project with external stakeholders.
  • UX
  • Agile Teamwork: Effective collaboration with retrospectives.
  • Licensing and Data Protection: Understanding open-source project requirements.

This summer semester, I will be supported by two students who are already well-versed in the project.

Upcoming Epics (we'll choose together based on team interest)

  • Gamification and various diagnostic findings.
  • Game over scenarios for different situations.
  • Refactoring 2D tutorials.
  • Implementing VR tutorials.
  • Enhancing UX.
  • Implementing various graphs with the UI Toolkit using existing chart components.
  • Your innovative ideas.
