With their digital technology, control units, and interfaces, modern cars are highly networked rolling computers. This makes emergency vehicles used by the police or fire department attractive targets for cyberattacks. The HECA research project, “Hardening emergency vehicles to protect against cyberattacks,” is working to counter this. On behalf of the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, computer science professors Christoph Krauß and Stefan Valentin and their team are putting police vehicles through their paces.
